In the last post, I detailed the construction of the Lunchbox Copter. I’ve taken it out for a few flights, and I’m pretty happy with the way it flies. I wanted to get some aerial video so I attached a GoPro to the top of it:
The flight video is a bit unstable because the camera is attached directly to the box itself, with no gimbal or vibration dampening of any kind. However I am pleased that there is no “jello effect” in the video which I see a lot of in aerial quadcopter videos.
Hey, so I am very honored that you made this. Very cool. A couple things to mention. Your booms could be longer to get you motors out farther. So that the downward thrust from the props isn’t pushing on the box. I’ve found that the motors don’t have to be perfectly square. Having the Motors out making a rectangle works great. There is a limit to how far. Too far and the Quad gets a bit squirmy. I like how you went for a rigid copter by just zip tying the wood in place. Anyway, theres my two cents. Thank you again.

Hi Jake,
Thanks for the input. Yeah, I was contemplating putting the motors farther out for the reason you mentioned but I wasn’t sure how far I could go or what that would do to its flight behavior. One of my booms broke yesterday so maybe I’ll give it a try with some longer ones on the re-build.
